Forget The Tick Box Exercise

Wishing all our readers a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2025.

Let’s make 2025 the year for taking ownership and responsibility for ensuring the safe evacuation of all mobility impaired persons from all types of buildings.

Let’s get back to basics and common sense and not overwhelmed by misinformation and misinterpretation that possibly puts lives at risk.

It’s simple, in a commercial premises, anyone permitted entry must be able to be evacuated safely without depending on the Fire Service. In a residential building there may be additional challenges to address but there are always solutions.

Let’s get priorities right, safe evacuation is more important than issues such as addressing a small gap under a fire door or awaiting budget to be approved, suitable and sufficient provisions must be in place now.

To do this you should:

  • Understand your building fire strategy

  • Ensure you have effective emergency procedures

  • Ensure you have a PEEPs/GEEPs process in place

  • Have a professional survey or audit carried out

  • Ensure you have the correct equipment

  • Appoint and train operators of any equipment

  • Carryout at least annual maintenance and refresher training

  • Review requirements at least annually

Forget the tick box exercise, get professional advice for peace of mind.
