We have said it before and will say it again, it is shocking how many people still think it is the role of the Fire Service to evacuate mobility impaired persons from their buildings or say their fire risk assessment didn’t mention evacuation requirements or PEEPs so don’t think they need to do anything !
Whilst appreciating the need for employers within all sectors to have external competent advisors where necessary, there is nothing more rewarding than providing a clear understanding of legislative requirements to empower responsible persons and duty holders to take ownership of their fire safety management and evacuation requirements so they have a clear understanding, can implement the appropriate improvements where required, take ownership of fire risk assessment reports and action plans rather than potentially being misled, manage expenditure and where necessary challenge external advisors, regulators and enforcing authorities.
With an increased focus on third party accredited fire risk assessors, employers and service providers should be reminded that whilst they can outsource a service they can not outsource responsibility therefore must be educated to assist them to take ownership and not led into a false sense of compliance. Times need to change to ensure there is more focus on life safety, the safe evacuation of all users of buildings and the right solutions.
