Understanding Evacuation Requirements

Since our “Taking Ownership” blog, we have had many discussions around the topic of who decides what is required.

It is essential to understand that whilst external advice may be obtained, the person responsible for the fire safety management of the building must take ownership and be satisfied that all occupants of their building can be evacuated safely, this includes people with temporary or permanent mobility impairments.

To achieve this there must be an understanding of current requirements, ensuring the correct supporting documentation and procedures are in place, the correct equipment is provided in the most suitable location, personnel are trained in the correct use of any equipment provided and regular maintenance is carried out. All of this must also be regularly reviewed.

No one would dream of a commercial building without fire extinguishers for a variety of reasons, the same must apply for evacuation equipment.

In the next few months, we are introducing more new initiatives to continue with our mission to raise awareness and improve standards. In the meantime, if have any concerns about current requirements or concerns you could not evacuate everyone safely please get in touch.
